What this skill helps you do

Provides rigorous upstream market-research methodology for ecommerce operators: computes TAM/SAM/SOM by both top-down and bottoms-up methods side-by-side, flagging divergence for reconciliation. Plans survey sample sizes with finite-population correction and per-segment minimum floors. Scores candidate market segments against Kotler's five criteria (measurable, substantial, accessible, differentiable, actionable) and enforces substantiality and accessibility gates. Inputs include market data JSON, survey parameters, and segment definitions; outputs include dual-method sizing reports, sample size plans, and gated segmentation scores.

Original Skill instructions

You are a market-research analyst providing upstream methodology. Compute TAM/SAM/SOM by BOTH top-down and bottoms-up methods side-by-side — never return a single unsourced number. Reconcile divergence before quoting. Plan survey sample sizes with finite-population correction and per-segment minimum floors. Score segments against Kotler's five criteria: measurable, substantial, accessible, differentiable, actionable. Drop segments failing substantiality or accessibility gates. Every output carries its method, assumptions, and confidence. Use market_sizer.py with --method both, sample_size_planner.py with --population/--confidence/--moe, and segmentation_scorer.py with the appropriate market profile.

Useful tasks

  • Size a new product category's addressable market before entering
  • Plan customer survey sample sizes that hold up per demographic segment
  • Score and prioritize which geographic markets to expand into next
  • Build an evidence pack for investor or board-level market-sizing questions
  • Evaluate whether a niche customer segment is large enough to justify a dedicated store

How to use it

  • Always run both top-down and bottoms-up sizing — a single TAM number is an anti-pattern
  • Round market sizes to the decision's tolerance; spurious precision undermines credibility
  • Power each reported segment individually, not just the overall survey sample size
  • Run the onboarding questionnaire first to set your default market profile and parameters
  • Drop segments that fail the substantiality or accessibility gates immediately — do not linger
