What this Skill does

Start with the month's commercial priorities: which products need attention, which offers are approved and which customers should receive them. The Skill turns that brief into a campaign calendar and develops the subject, message and next action for each audience.

It is useful when the team has promotion ideas but no coherent sending plan. Drafts and timing recommendations are delivered as planning material; list selection, automation setup and sending happen in your email platform.

02

What makes it different

01

Approach and advantage

The calendar connects audience, message and timing instead of listing isolated promotions. Welcome messages introduce the store, post-purchase messages support product use, and win-back messages address a different customer situation.

02

What you can use it for

Develop a full month, an abandoned-cart series or subject-line alternatives from the same brief. Product claims, discounts and customer proof come from your approved material, keeping campaigns consistent when several teammates edit them.

03

Before you use it

Inputs to prepare

Brand voice, products, approved offers, audience segments, and verified past campaign results.

Agent and runtime

A model chat is enough to draft from these instructions. Real system access or file changes need separately configured tools.

Scope to confirm

No email platform connection or sending code is included. Sample scarcity, customer counts, and expected rates must not become unsupported claims.

04

Install and get started

Use these instructions in a chat, or ask Codex / Claude Code to save them as a personal Skill for repeated tasks.

  1. Open Codex or Claude Code with local file and terminal access.
  2. Copy the request below into the app you are using. The assistant will select that app’s installation directory.
  3. Check the returned path and file checks. Start a new session if needed, then ask the assistant to use the installed Skill.
Set up a personal reusable instruction template for Email Campaign Writer in the app I am using. 1. Read the “Collected instruction template” section at https://ecomagenttools.com/skills/email-campaign-writer. Use only that complete instruction text, not the page’s reviews, FAQ or installation explanation. If you cannot retrieve the complete text, ask me to paste it; do not guess it or download a same-named third-party package. 2. Show which assumptions, placeholders and access requirements I need to supply. Preserve the collected task instructions. This is a locally adapted template, not an original-author package. 3. If you are Codex or Claude Code with local file access, create a personal Skill named email-campaign-writer-local under ~/.agents/skills/email-campaign-writer-local/SKILL.md for Codex or ~/.claude/skills/email-campaign-writer-local/SKILL.md for Claude Code. Add valid name and description frontmatter if absent; keep the collected instructions in the body and identify the local adaptation. Do not overwrite an existing Skill. If you are in a chat-only app, use these instructions in the current conversation instead and do not claim a local installation. 4. Return the saved path or current-chat setup result and a starter request for this task. List any required tools or data that remain unconfigured. Do not claim account/API access or a completed business workflow just because the template was saved.
05

Collected instruction template

Network-collected; no confirmed author source. The collected text was reviewed, but it has not been linked to a verified original publication. This does not establish that no official package exists; the examples here use only the collected text.

You are an ecommerce email marketing strategist and copywriter. When given a product category and brand description, you will:

1. Generate a 30-day email calendar covering:
   - Welcome series (3 emails: Day 0, 2, 5)
   - Browse abandonment (Day 1 after browse)
   - Cart abandonment (3 emails: 1h, 24h, 72h)
   - Post-purchase (2 emails: Day 7, 21)
   - Win-back (30+ days inactive)
   - Weekly newsletter / promotion

2. For each email, provide:
   - Subject line (with emoji)
   - Preview text
   - Full body copy
   - CTA button text
   - Recommended send time
   - Target segment

3. Apply these principles:
   - Personalization: use {first_name}, {product_name}, {cart_value}
   - Scarcity when genuine: "Only 3 left in your size"
   - Social proof: "Join 50,000+ happy customers"
   - A/B test subject line variants

4. Include performance benchmarks:
   - Expected open rate for each email type
   - Expected click rate
   - Industry average for comparison

Output format: Markdown calendar with clear email separators.

Worked example: Build a 30-day calendar with 14 complete emails

HarborMug needs email drafts for US customers who opted in. Product facts, shipping and return terms, plus synthetic benchmarks support a coordinated welcome, abandonment, post-purchase and newsletter calendar.

Steps and prompt

  1. Prepare the attached business materials, preserving amounts, units, dates and metric definitions.
  2. Plan our next 30 days of lifecycle email. Write all 14 messages with subjects, preview text, complete bodies and a single CTA each. Coordinate welcome, cart recovery, post-purchase and newsletter messages; define frequency caps, purchase exits and support exclusions. Use our supplied historical benchmarks to set realistic review priorities.
  3. Submit the exact prompt below. Read the primary deliverable on the right and download all deliverables for the team handoff.

Case input files: business-inputs.zip

Use the email-campaign-writer Skill.

The attached business materials are:
- inputs/brief.json
- inputs/supplemental-benchmarks.json

Deliver a complete result.md report that the operations team can read, plus any finished files needed for this task. Keep supporting calculations and evidence with the deliverables. Write the report in English; use the requested target language for customer-facing copy. The business datasets are fictional examples unless the brief explicitly names a live public website.

What the run produced

The primary file produced by this prompt is shown below in its original language.

HarborMug: 30-day lifecycle email plan

Decision: Run 14 email assets across November 3–December 2, 2026, inclusive, in America/New_York. These are conditional flows and four weekly newsletters, not 14 sends to every subscriber. Customer copy is en-US. All merchant data and benchmark figures supplied for this exercise are synthetic. No emails have been sent and no performance improvement is claimed.

The plan uses the $24, 500ml insulated stainless steel mug without discounts, inventory urgency, review quotes or customer-count claims: none has supporting evidence. The campaign starts on the supplied date; do not backfill missed sends if activation occurs later.

For example, a November 3 opt-in receives welcome candidates on November 3, 5 and 8. A November 3 confirmed delivery generates post-purchase candidates on November 10 and 24. Each candidate still requires the checks below. Later entrants may have steps falling after December 2; those are outside this campaign window and must be reviewed for the next cycle. Existing entrants may receive in-window steps based on their true event dates; never replay already-sent steps.

Enforceable send rules

  1. Consent and eligibility: Require explicit marketing opt-in, a deliverable email address, an approved destination, and a valid event record. Suppress unsubscribes, complaints and hard bounces globally. Suppress undeliverable addresses according to the sending platform's policy. Purchase alone is not marketing consent, including for P1 and P2.
  2. Caps: Across every marketing flow and broadcast, allow at most one email in any rolling 24 hours and three in any rolling 168 hours. Count actual sends, including subject-test variants. At send time, atomically reserve a send slot after checking the shared contact-level log; simultaneous automations must not each pass independently. A send exactly 24 hours later is allowed. Required order and support service messages use a separate transactional stream; do not add promotional content to bypass the cap.
  3. Quiet hours: Send between 09:00 and 20:00 America/New_York; queue to the next allowed time if necessary. Use timezone-aware arithmetic for rolling hours, including the November 1 daylight-saving transition for any pre-window events. Day-based flows use local calendar dates at the stated hour; cart delays and cap windows use elapsed hours.
  4. Priority: Cart > post-purchase > welcome > browse > win-back > newsletter. Re-evaluate events and suppressions immediately before dispatch. Cancel pending browse on cart creation. Pause unsent welcome steps while a cart flow is active; recheck after cart closure, without replaying expired steps. Do not let browse compete with an active welcome or post-purchase flow. Newsletters and win-back require no active higher-priority flow, including a waiting or cap-delayed step. A new cart may interrupt post-purchase; the shared cap still applies.
  5. Purchase exits: Any completed purchase immediately cancels all queued cart and browse messages and ends welcome acquisition steps, including their retries. Do not rely only on periodic segment refresh. Subscribe an eligible consenting buyer to post-purchase once delivery is confirmed. If delivery is missing or disputed, hold both post-purchase steps and route the record for review. Do not infer delivery from an estimated date. A new purchase cancels the win-back candidate and restarts inactivity; cancel old post-purchase messages to avoid overlapping order sequences, then anchor the new sequence to its delivery. Canceled or fully refunded orders exit post-purchase.
  6. Support exclusions: Pause all 14 marketing assets for open returns, refund requests, delivery disputes, damaged-item reports and other unresolved support tickets. A support pause cancels pending abandonment sends; after closure, require fresh qualifying activity to start abandonment again. Do not resume old cart reminders. Mia owns support triage; Alex handles escalations and refund approval review. Resume ordinary marketing only after documented resolution, at least 48 hours later and subject to consent, caps and fresh eligibility. Do not replay missed steps. An unresolved issue stays suppressed indefinitely.
  7. Queue expiry: Defer cap-blocked triggered messages to the first permitted slot in their validity window; never send two to catch up. C1 expires at cart hour 24; C2 expires at hour 72; C3 expires at hour 96. The next step replaces an expired step. Cart inactivity is anchored to the last material cart change; invalidate old queued candidates when it changes. A material change can reset the timer but cannot replay an already-sent step in the same cart episode. Limit to one three-message cart episode per contact per rolling 7 days. A new episode after that needs fresh cart activity. At cart hour 96 close the episode and discard its queue. Recheck the cart is available and nonempty before every send.
  8. Other expiry and reentry: Welcome and post-purchase steps expire 48 hours after their nominal due time; browse expires 48 hours after the qualifying view. Welcome is once per contact, browse at most once per rolling 7 days, and each post-purchase step once per qualifying order. Browse requires identified, consented activity and no later cart or purchase. Win-back expires after November 26 and is at most once per 30 days; define inactivity as no click, identified browse, cart or purchase for 30 full days, with a prior qualifying event and no active flow. Opens alone do not establish activity. If history is insufficient, exclude rather than infer inactivity. Newsletters expire at 20:00 on their scheduled day and are skipped if blocked. No send from this plan may occur after December 2, 20:00.

Cap example: If C1 sends at cart hour 1, C2 cannot send at hour 24 because only 23 hours have elapsed. Its earliest slot is hour 25. C3 may send at hour 72 if quiet hours and the rolling seven-day count permit it. Those three sends consume the entire three-per-seven-day allowance; a newsletter is skipped. If earlier marketing has already used the allowance, cart also waits or expires—priority never overrides the cap.

Known return case: The supplied unopened-item request was made 14 days after delivery. It appears eligible for review within the 30-day unused-item window, but a refund is not approved by this plan. Keep the contact suppressed while Mia handles the request and Alex reviews any final refund. Its nominal delivery+21 check-in would fall on November 10 and must be excluded while the case is open. Never turn a return request into a win-back or cross-sell opportunity.

Benchmarks and review priorities

The supplemental file supplies planned email rates and a synthetic “industry comparison.” Neither file contains historical email sends, delivered counts, opens, clicks, conversion rates, unsubscribes or complaints. Therefore the table below is a planning reference, not a forecast validated by history or a measured industry average. Expected rates here mean the supplied planning assumptions, shared by all messages of that type.

Define open rate as unique recipients with a recorded open / delivered emails; click rate as unique recipients clicking a primary product/cart CTA / delivered emails. Exclude footer clicks, filter bot activity where supported, and do not treat click rate as click-to-open rate. Confirm these definitions match the platform before comparing results. Privacy-related opens make opens directional.

Type / IDsPlanned openPlanned clickSynthetic comparison open / clickDifference, percentage points open / clickReview focus
Welcome W1–W345%4%35% / 2%+10 / +2Entry quality, welcome-to-purchase path
Browse B138%3%35% / 2%+3 / +1Identification and browse/cart suppression
Cart C1–C342%5%35% / 2%+7 / +3First: exits, caps, cart links and checkout completion
Post-purchase P1–P240%3%35% / 2%+5 / +1First: delivery anchors and support exclusions
Win-back R130%2%35% / 2%−5 / 0Lower priority: consent, inactivity quality and complaints
Newsletter N1–N435%2.5%35% / 2%0 / +0.5Engagement and broadcast collision checks

The only supplied historical business comparison is weekly store activity: orders 100→120, sessions 4,000→4,800, gross sales $2,400→$2,880, refunds $120→$144 and ad spend $300→$360, all up 20%. Average order value stays $24, orders per session stays 2.5%, refunds/gross stays 5%, and ad spend per order stays $3. Gross less refunds rises $2,280→$2,736. These show scale growth with flat ratios; they do not demonstrate better email performance or an email-driven sales lift. Gross per ad dollar is 8 in both weeks, an aggregate ratio rather than attributed advertising ROAS.

At $24 per mug, two mugs total $48 and do not qualify for free shipping; three total $72 and do. Illustrative one-unit contribution is $17 including the $5 shipping collection, after $8 unit cost and $4 merchant shipping cost, before taxes, fees, returns and advertising. Without shipping collection it is $12. This is arithmetic using the supplied per-order assumptions, not realized profit or a multi-unit shipping-cost model. Keep the campaign at full price; there is no approved offer or measured basis for a discount.

Review cadence and testing

  • Before activation: Prioritize purchase exits, return/support suppression, atomic caps, correct cart recovery and mandatory links above optimizing opens. Test a new subscriber, browse-to-cart transition, cart-to-purchase transition, open return, missing delivery and cap collision. Record send, skip and expiry reasons.
  • Day 7 (November 9): Review actual delivered counts, hard bounces, complaints, unsubscribes, primary CTA clickers and purchase-linked outcomes by asset. Compare with the relevant planning reference and report denominators. Investigate broken links and eligibility first if engagement is weak.
  • Day 14 (November 16): Review welcome and cart clicks and attributed order completion. Check support replies from P1. Prioritize cart because its planned click rate is highest (5%); this does not prove it will generate the most revenue without audience counts.
  • Day 21 (November 23): Review newsletter engagement, queue skips and post-purchase eligibility. Adjust pressure downward if contacts complain or negative engagement grows. Hold any affected flow immediately for an incorrect recipient, purchase exit failure or support suppression failure.
  • Day 30 (December 2): Consolidate actual counts, click rates, opt-outs, complaints, attributed orders and refunds by type and asset. Keep open rates secondary. Record remaining queued steps for next-cycle review; do not extend this campaign automatically.

Every message below has two subject variants. Keep body, preview, timing and eligibility identical. Start with a 50/50 persistent random split of eligible contacts within each flow; broadcasts retain stable contact assignment. Do not resend to non-openers. With no list size or baseline variance, do not promise statistical significance. Test W1 first, then C1 if volume supports it; use A for the other assets until enough eligible volume exists. Select a winner using primary CTA click rate, while monitoring purchase outcomes and unsubscribes. Report counts and uncertainty; a small difference is inconclusive. Email-attributed orders are descriptive and are not proof of incremental lift without a separately designed holdout experiment.

Complete customer-facing emails

All bodies below are complete apart from required personalization and merchant-owned URLs/contact details. Append the exact shared footer shown after the messages to every body. Each message has one promotional CTA button; preferences and unsubscribe links are mandatory utility links. Reply invitations are support access, not extra promotional buttons. No images or extra product links are required.

Hi {first_name},

Planning a HarborMug order? Here’s how US shipping works.

Our {product_name} is $24. One mug has a $24 item subtotal plus $5 shipping. Two mugs have a $48 item subtotal, so the $5 shipping fee still applies. Three mugs have a $72 item subtotal and qualify for free shipping. Any applicable tax is additional.

Choose the quantity you actually need. We dispatch within 2 business days, and delivery takes 3–5 business days after dispatch.

Implementation handoff and release checks

  • Insert approved product, per-contact cart, preferences and unsubscribe URLs. Product buttons go to the supplied mug's approved page, not a general catalog. Insert the merchant postal address and configure a monitored support reply-to inbox. Verify sender identity and sending authentication in the merchant's sending platform. Missing links or sender details block activation; these are drafts ready for implementation, not loaded automations.
  • Resolve {first_name} to a validated name or “there”; {product_name} to “500ml insulated stainless steel mug”; {cart_value} to the current formatted USD item subtotal, excluding shipping/tax. If the cart data is missing or stale, suppress the cart email and log it. Escape all personalization values for the rendering format. Product price and shipping must be revalidated against merchant-approved data before release. Re-review copy if terms change.
  • Treat all 14 messages, including care/check-ins, as marketing for consent and caps. If using an HTML template, keep the single primary CTA, shared footer, readable mobile layout and plain-text alternative. Do not add urgency, reviews, discount codes, holiday arrival guarantees or unverified performance claims.
  • Run test renders and destination checks after approved URLs are inserted. Simulate C1 at hour 1 and C2 at hour 24 (must defer); three sends within 168 hours (fourth blocked); purchase immediately before a queued cart send (must cancel); an open return before P2 (must suppress); and newsletter collision with an active welcome/cart sequence (must skip). These sending-platform checks remain prerequisites because no platform or live URLs were provided.
